Lazarus and the Quran

Lazarus and the Rich man and the Quran both agree on one simple fact. Angels take away the soul at death and carry it into Heaven. Soul sleep and going to heaven at death are both found in the Bible and Quran.

Luke 16:22-23, "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom."

Surah 6:61, “He is the Irresistible, (Supreme) over His slaves, and He sends guardian (angels guarding and writing all of one’s good and bad deeds) over you, until when death approaches one of you. Our Messengers (angel of death and his assistant) take his soul, and they never neglect their duty.” (The Noble Quran Edition).

Surah 16:32,33, "Those whose lives the angels take while they are in a pious state saying to them, Peace be upon you enter you Paradise, because of that (the good) which you used to do (in the world)." Do they (the disbelievers) await but that the angels should come to them to take their souls at death, or there should come the command of your Lord?"

Lazarus had his soul taken away by an angel at death. The Quran confirms two angels take away souls at death. The angels smite the faces of the disbelievers at death and receive the righteous. The soul is conscious at death.

Surah 47:27, "Then how will it be when the angels will take their souls at death, smiting their faces and their backs?"

Surah 32.11, Say: "The Angel of Death who is set over you will take your souls. Then you will be brought to your Lord."

Surah 41:30, "Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is God Alone," and then they stand firm, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) saying: "Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!" "We have been your friends in the life of this world and are so in the Hereafter. Therein you shall have all that your inner-selves, desire, and therein you shall have all for which you ask.""

Visions of Paul 15-16: "And he saith to me: Look again down on the earth, and watch the soul of an impious man going out of the body, which vexed the Lord day and night ... And after these things, there came at the same time, the holy angels, and the malign, and the soul of the sinner and the holy angels did not find a place in it. Moreover the malign angels cursed it; and when they had drawn it out of the body, the angels admonished it a third time, saying: O wretched soul, look upon thy flesh, whence thou camest out: for it is necessary that thou shouldst return to thy flesh in the day of resurrection, that thou mayest receive the due for thy sins and thy impieties. And when they had led it forth, the customary angel preceded it, and said to it: O wretched soul, I am the angel belonging to thee, relating daily to the Lord thy malign works, whatever thou didst by night or day: and if it were in my power, not for one day would I minister to thee, but none of these things was I able to do: the judge is pitiful and just, and he himself commanded us that we should not cease to minister to the soul, till you should repent, but thou hast lost the time of repentance. I indeed was strange to thee and thou to me. Let us go on then to the just judge: I will not dismiss thee, before I know from to-day why I was strange to thee. And the spirit confounded him, and the angel troubled him."

Angels are in charge of taking the soul into the Seven Heavens. This is called the Angel of Death and his assistant. The righteous are taken to Paradise. The unrighteous will have their faces and backs smitten by angels at the time of death. The physical body remains in a deep sleep until the Day of Resurrection when soul and spirit are reunited with the body.

Lazarus is in Paradise until the Day of Resurrection when his soul and body will return to the earth with a returning Jesus Christ and His saints. Jesus said to one of the criminals hanging on the cross next to Him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43). Today is referring to the period of 24 hours in Jesus' day not a future event some 2,000 years later. Otherwise Jesus would have lied. The soul is a spiritual copy of the physical person. It has consciousness after death. The angels are charged with bringing the souls into the Seven Heavens.
